Round two of the Vic Wreckers Interclub threw some challenging conditions for riders at the State Motorcycle Complex Broadford last Sunday. Despite the weather guessers saying it was going to be mild with sunny periods, it turned out to be overcast, dull, dreary and then finally icy cold and wet towards the end of the day. This showed the mettle of the riders who were prepared to head out and race in the difficult conditions. Clo Hennesy who has recently converted from track days to racing was one of the few who kept at it after the rain fell and was rewarded with an overall win in the 250 class. Just deserves for her perseverance when many much more experienced racers packed it in and went home. Lap records were never going to be beaten with the track temps not being warm enough to provide maximum grip for all the classes, however that didn’t stop the racing from being exciting to watch. Several pole sitters were challenged and beaten in the races and some more favoured riders ended up having to sit on the lower steps of the podium as other riders stepped up and took the challenge to them.
Superbikes-Formula 1A
Trent Binaisse was unbeatable in all three races of the formula 1A class. Trent on his aging Suzuki has been making massive improvements over the past two seasons and is riding consistently fast. He headed to round two in second place in the overall standing and first in B grade after being re graded from C grade last year. I think this has been a good thing, with Trent rising to the challenge of now having to run with the faster A and B graders. With Nathan Jones not attending round two, this also gave Trent the opportunity to gain maximum points and he now leads both the A and B grade class in the series. Trent celebrated his race win in the first race with a nice controlled loft of the front wheel over the line which is always great for the crowds. Wayne Kulmer had the opportunity to rake in some points after taking a second place to Trent in race one. However, he didn’t front the grid for the next two races of the day and missed the opportunity to gain those valuable series points. Rick Beddome rode well to take a third and two second places and Chris Hooper also capitalised on the other riders not fronting for race two and three, taking third place in the final two races and gaining valuable championship points.

Formula 1B
Tim Large took the overall honors for the weekend through some consistent riding and not allowing the weather to deter him from fronting the grid. He edged out Anthony Stephens who although sitting on pole was riding a new to him Kawasaki for the first time. Stephens had some setting up to do and was finding the suspension settings to not be right for his….err…additional mass compared with the previous owner of the bike. But he soon enough got going and took two race wins in the second and third races. He was very fast last year on his twin sprint bike, so I think once he has the bike sorted, he is going to be one to keep an eye on. Although not featuring in the points list below, Zachary Johnson who is normally doing state and national duties on his quick Yamaha R6, took the opportunity to enter and took the first race win. However, he didn’t front for race two and three, gifting the wins to Stephens. Travis De Bono was consistent and didn’t allow the wet weather to trouble him. His style is very Moto 3, with his elbows almost always near on the deck in the corners and he was as always great to watch. Dmytrii Nagirniak took fourth overall, which is a great result for a rider who has also only recently made the switch from Bracket racing to full race meets. Rancell Desker had a little oops in race three, blotting his near perfect copy book and took fifth for the day as a result. But Rancell has been riding very fast of late and was very quick at the Vic champs a few weeks back. So we look forward to seeing him back out there at the front of the pack soon enough. Rancell also took out the best presented award for his Kawasaki ZX6R which always looks fantastic. Obviously judged prior to the little interaction with the tarmac.

Pre Modern
David Buonopane returned to form after some mechanical issues forced him out of the Vic Championships a few weeks prior. But it wasn’t a weekend of reliability with his Suzuki, after an oil seal let go in the first practice. Thankfully David was able to repair the leak and get his GSXR1000 back out before the first race commenced. David looked unbeatable in the first two races, leading the field by 6 or 7 seconds across the line. However, he only managed third place in the last race, some 22 seconds behind winner Tim Large on his 600 and 9 seconds behind Travis De Bono on his smaller capacity Suzuki. But there was good reason for David not being in form for the last race, after having a massive highside on some old wet tyres in the team shield race. It was only with the assistance of Alan Clyne from Moto National accessories/Kabuto Helmets that he managed to tape and bolt the bike back together and front the grid for the final leg. It’s a credit to his determination, as the bike was very second hand, with a bolt having to be tapped into the gear lever to get it rideable again. A lesser rider may have packed up and gone home.

Super Mono
Matt Dean, Benny Asplin and Bruce Hill al fought hard each race, all taking a win in the Supermono class. Bruce was riding his new to him Aprilia 550 SXV and appeared to be adapting well to it. He improved his finish with every race, taking third, second and then finally a first place in the last race. Matt Dean took the first race win, but ended race two in Fourth to finish third overall for the day and Benny Asplin managed to just Pip Bruce for the overall win for the day with a win in the second race and two second places to end up just two points ahead of Bruce.

250cc Road Based
Clo Hennessy showed she has some grit and stuck it out all day despite the attrocious weather in the afternoon to take out the 250cc four stroke road based class. Clo who is yet another who has only just commenced racing after dipping her toe in the water last year at ride days. Clo rode brilliantly and continues to improve her times with each outing on her little Honda CBR250. Clo also used good judgement and took it easy in the slippery and cold conditions in the afternoon, bringing the bike home in one piece and not crashing out. With many more experienced riders bailing out once the weather turned foul, I tip my hat to Clo for her determined approach.

Sidecars
Only three sidecars attended round two. However it was fantastic to see Declan and Noel Beare take out a perfect score for the day with three race wins. Melissa Foot swung for Micheal Cooper and they ended the day with three second places and while Goeff Irwin and his passenger Wendy Miller took three third places, they also took out three wins in the period 5 class. Congratulations to all six for entering and we hope more sidecars attend for the remaining rounds as they are an awesome class to watch.

Preston only just managed to beat Sandringham in the team shield by just four points. So a great effort from the Sandringham club at this round. The Harley club slipped to fourth place by virtue of scoring zero points on Sunday and Gippsland Centre leapfrogged the Harley club to sit in third place in the team shield. Bring on round three!
