So your child is getting involved in competitive motorcycle sport.
The first thing you need to do it take them along to a coaching day so that they can be assessed on their riding skills and theoretical knowledge of the sport. You can contact your local club to find out when your local coaching days are on.
On the coaching day, the designated coach will supply you with a Kick Start Booklet (if you would like a copy prior to the coaching day please call 03 5784 2827 to get one sent out to you). This booklet contains 2 assessments that your child will need to successfully complete in order to gain a successful endorsement for the bike they are on.
Assessment 1 – Assesses the child’s competency on the motorcycle which is done by the coach and child discussing, and understanding the correct methodology behind the 10 main criteria listed in the Kick Start Booklet (on pages 24-25), from here your child will be asked to present and demonstrate these 10 main criteria to the coach. The coach on the day will have to complete all of the information over pages 24-25 as a record of competency for your child on that specific motorcycle – below is an example of how the completed book should look.
Assessment 2 – Is a multiple choice theory test, this is found on pages 26-28 of the Kick Start Booklet and is completed by the child in the coach’s presence. The coach will assess the answers and ensure they are correct before signing off that the child is competent and has therefore competed assessment 2. In order to pass this theory test the child must have at least 23 out of 25 answers correct, all of the information for the answers is contained in the front section of the booklet.
Once completed you will need to scan or take a photo of pages 24-25 that have been completed by the coach, this will then be used in the licence application process. Without this record a child aged 7-16 years old will not be able to purchase a Junior National Licence.
Once your child’s licence is approved by Motorcycling Victoria it will be sent out with a ‘Junior Coaching Program – Competitor Log Book’ this book contains ‘Endorsement competency records’ in order for your child to be able to race larger capacity bike they will be required to attend another coaching day, and have the endorsement completed for the larger capacity bike. Once completed you will again need to take a photo or scan the 2 pages and upload these into your Ridernet profile in the ‘My Licence’ section.
IMPORTANT: Before leaving the coaching day, please ensure that the coach has fully completed the Kick Start Assessment 1 or Endorsement paperwork as shown below, if anything is left blank Motorcycling Victoria will not approve the paperwork and refer you back to your coach..
