Becoming an Official can be a rewarding and at times, challenging role. Officials duties are many and varied. Officials have the responsibility to ensure that race meetings are conducted in the safest environment possible for competitors and spectators. An Official could be a Marshall, a Timekeeper, Steward/Referee, Clerk of Course, Starter, Judge, Race Secretary, Scrutineer, or Measurer. Each of these duties has a responsibility to ensure the safety of riders in a competing event.
Officials are an essential part of competition motorcycle events. Many Officials are volunteers who provide fantastic support to these events. To become a volunteer, you will need to apply by completing the application form - you can download the form from the link below, or simply contact us and we will mail the form out to you.
An Official will start as Level 2. At this level you will be able to officiate at club level events only. You have the opportunity to progress through to a Level 3 (State level events) and Level 4 (National evets) with the correct training and relevant experience.
An important part of becoming an Official involves undertaking a training course. Ian Willis, State Coaching and Officials Director, conducts the course. Each course consists of 2 sessions involving theory and practical components, as well as a test that must be passed. The cost of the course is $20 per person. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be recognized as a qualified Official.
For those wishing to renew their Officials Licence, this comes at no cost. Provided you have completed an Officials Course in the four (4) years previous, simply complete the Application Form and return to Motorcycling Victoria. For those who last completed an Officials Course longer than four (4) years ago, you will need to complete the Officials Test (not the course!) again at no cost. Please contact Motorcycling Victoria if you need to complete the Officials Test.
For further details or information regarding the course, please contact Paul Williams at the MV Office on 03 9482 5422 or alternatively by email at paul@motorcyclingvic.com.au.
Further information can also be found at the Australian Sports Commission's Officials website, or by visiting Motorcycling Australia's Officials section.
