Kristy Gillespie on track for seventh Victorian title

DEFENDING 2011 Victorian Ladies champion Kristy Gillespie has a handy 17 point lead in the Ladies class going into the third round of the 2012 Victorian Senior Motocross Championships which will take place at the Maffra-Sale Motorcycle Club next weekend on May 26-27.

Remarkably, the 2010 Australian Women’s Motocross champion is chasing her seventh Victorian title.

The GMR Motorex KTM rider tops the overall leaderboard in the Ladies class with 192 points, having won six chequered flags so far this season, as well as picking up another chequered flag in Race 1 in the B Lites class in Round 2 at Cobram in April.

Gillespie beat a field of 26 other riders, which also included Maddy Brown who also finished eight, to win her first race over the guys at a Victorian Championship event: “I’ve never done that before, so it was pretty cool,” Gillespie remarked.

For Kristy, the overall aim for Round 3 is to stay out in front in the Ladies class at Maffra-Sale: “It’ll just be a matter of getting through the weekend and getting some good points,” Kristy said.

Gillespie won the 2011 Victorian Ladies title at Blue Rock Motorcycle Club in August last year with 290 points.

Asked on how her season’s been going so far, Gillespie replied: “I’m not sure what it is this year. I have seemed to improve a little bit, but I’m not sure why.

“I’m not really doing anything different to what I was. I guess the other thing is that somehow I found a little bit more confidence in myself or in my ability, and obviously with that I’m getting better starts and getting up front early which has helped me out 100 per cent,” Kristy analysed.

“As far as training goes, I’m doing nothing different to what I have been doing from previous years,” Kristy added.

“It seems to be working, so I’m not going to change it.

“Maddy Brown has been riding pretty well this year as well. There are a handful of girls who can easily win a moto in this class so you need to be on top of your game and one step ahead of them,” Kristy said of her competitors.

Sam Martin has a 28 point lead in the A Grade Open ahead of Tim Vare and Kyle McKeddie. 2011 Victorian A Grade champion Cameron Taylor sits just outside the overall placings in fourth.

16-year-old Joel Milesevic, from Lal Lal, heads the A Lites class on 139 points. Victorians Dylan Long and Lewis Woods are still in contention, being 14 and 17 points behind respectively.
Victorian Cheyne Boyd enjoyed his first podium result this season at Round 4 of the 2012 Monster...

DPH Motorsport Honda Racing's Cheyne Boyd enjoyed his first podium result this season with a second place victory at the Wanneroo round of the 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals.

The podium at Wanneroo has boosted Boyd's standing in the Championship with the Victorian now sitting in fourth position, after four of the ten scheduled rounds.

Boyd had had his sights set on a podium finish at Wanneroo and was able to produce the goods in the tough conditions on the weekend.

“I was really pumped to finish 2nd on the day and score some really good points," Boyd said.

"The team has worked really hard, both Dale (Hocking) and Brad (McAlpine) have been amazing and couldn't ask for better people to be in my corner.

“It was great to reward them with that result. I felt really comfortable in the sand all weekend, my starts were a lot better which for sure makes it easier especially in the back to back motos.

"I know there is room for improvement and that I need to continue to work hard. Luke Styke is riding really well and seems to have his starts dialled-in consistently.

"I know I can achieve the same consistency and am working hard to regain that form, each round brings us a little bit closer to achievingthat goal,” Boyd continued.

“Overall Wanneroo was a step in the right direction, even though it wasn't a win it was nice to be on the podium for Team DPH Motorsport and Honda Racing with a second place

“I know we have more wins to come and with the whole team working toward that goal I am looking forward to this weekend at Murray Bridge, I always done well there so I can't wait to show everyone how far we’ve come as a new team.

“Thanks to everyone at Honda Racing and Choice Suspension for their support and the team who are behind me 110 per cent. I look forward to many more podiums,” he concluded.

Team manager Brad McAlpine was pleased with the result and the continued development to date of the bikes.

“The bikes are working well, We made some suspension changes to suit the sandy conditions and the result was Cheyne qualified very well," stated McAlpine, "we checked the motor after qualifying and everything was looking good so we went into the motos confident of a good result."

"Full credit to Choice Suspension who have worked tirelessly to get the suspension setups to a point where they work well with Cheyne and the conditions,” McAlpine added.

Team owner Dale Hocking was delighted with the weekend's result.

“This is what it’s all about; to have a podium finish and gain valuable championship points is what we as a team are gunning for every round," Hocking enthused.

"It was great to see Cheyne on the podium and hopefully we can back it up with another win next week at Murray Bridge."

First Come 'n' Try Day for 2012 a success!

The first Come 'n' Try Day for MV's new and improved MotorSafe Program has been a succees.

YARRAM Secondary College participated in Motorcycling Victoria’s MotorSafe Program’s first Come ‘n’ Try Day of the year at Buckley’s Island Recreational Reserve on Friday, May 11.

Last year Yarram Secondary College took part in a MotorSafe Presentation and was deserving of a Come ‘n’ Try Day after a huge amount of students expressed an interest in participating.

The day consisted of 20 Yarram Secondary students who ditched the school books and picked up their motorcycles for a day of riding education. Most of the students had not ridden on a track before and were finally given the opportunity.

Motorcycling Victoria’s MotorSafe Officer Misty Walton made the journey to Yarram to meet some of the students as well as school teacher Ashton Webster and Yarram Motorcycle Club secretary Leigh Bland.

“All of the students had a ball on their bikes! It was really nice to see all the hard work of both Ash and Leigh, and the benefits of the program, finally paying off,” Ms Walton explained.

The Come ‘n’ Try Day started at the track at 9am and concluded at 3.30pm. This provided a full school days’ worth of coaching, education in riding techniques, bike set-up, free practice, and various challenges for the high school students.

“I was really surprised how much I learnt in just one day,” one student mentioned.

“It was the best day I’ve had at school ever!” said another young student.

Ashton Webster, Head of Health and Physical Education at Yarram, was particularly happy with the success of the day: “There were no injuries at all. The day went very smoothly,” Mr Webster confirmed.

Leigh Bland, Secretary of the Yarram Motorcycle Club, played an integral part in the organising of the school excursion. “This is the most local riders we have had at the track for a long time,” Leigh said.

The Come ‘n’ Try Day also provided a great opportunity to show the young and eager students what the Yarram Motorcycle Club had to offer.

“Yarram Secondary College, Yarram Motorcycle Club and Motorcycling Victoria worked tirelessly together and achieved a great result,” continued Ms Walton.

“It is yet to be confirmed how many new members of the club were gained by running this day, but it has already proved to be of great benefit to the students of Yarram Secondary College.”

The new and improved MotorSafe Program will be relaunched later this year and is still looking for clubs who would like to be involved. For more information on the MotorSafe Program or if your club would like to run a day like this please email Misty Walton at motorsafe@motorcyclingvic.com.au

BROADFORD’s State Motorcycle Sports Complex provided the perfect setting for the state’s most talented juniors as it hosted Round 2 of the 2012 Victorian Junior Motocross Championships over the weekend on May 12-13.

Morgan Fogarty, one of Victoria’s rising talents, continued his excellent run of form from Ballarat by picking up the overall win for the round in the 85/150cc B Grade SW class.

The 12-year-old flew around the revamped Broadford track, which also hosted the MX Nationals last year, with one of his fastest times clocked at 1:46:631.

Emma Milesevic also picked up where she left off at Monza Park by winning three out of three motos in the Vic Chicks class, with Sarah Stubbs and Aylsha Goullet finishing in a close second and third respectively in every moto.

Callum Norton, 2011 65cc 9-U11 Australian and 65cc A Grade Victorian champion, got his season back on track at Broadford as he battled it out throughout the weekend with other talented youngsters Taj Marshall and Cody Dyce in the 85/150cc A Grade SW class.

“In the first race I went okay, but I could’ve gone a bit better,” the GMR Motorex KTM rider reflected on his second-place behind Taj from Blue Rock Motorcycle Club.

“The second race was pretty good. I came up from fifth into first and had a good battle with Cody (Dyce) for the rest of the race.

“In the third race, I got a good start and got the holeshot and then I got a little gap and Taj and Cody started to close in on me a little bit but then I ended up with a first.

“I really liked the track on the weekend. It was pretty nice,” Callum continued.

“At the first round I didn’t go too well, but at Broadford I made up a few points, and I hope to remain in the top three for the rest of the season,” Callum said.

“I also plan on going to the 2012 Australian Junior Motocross Championships in October at Coolum where I hope to finish in the top five.”

Other standout Victorians from the weekend were Josh Spiteri who took out the overall win in the 250cc C Grade class, Jake Hodgkinson who took out the overall win in the 250cc B Grade class, and Jeremy Tyndall took the overall round win in the 250cc A Grade class.

Round 2 provided plenty of spectacles for race-going fans across all grades. To mention a few: Matthew Hopkins-Talty recorded one of the fastest times of the weekend in the 250cc A Grade class with a 1:41:604, whilst impressively 12-year-old Ebony Harris of Geelong MCC beat the boys from start to finish in the first race of the 85/150cc C Grade Class on Sunday.

Jesse McNally from Ballarat had the perfect weekend at Broadford as he achieved six wins from six starts. He took out the overall round win in the 85/150 A Grade BW class as well as in the 125/150cc A Grade class.

Entries for Rounds 7 & 8 of the 2012 Yamaha VORC close next Wednesday, May 16 at midnight.

THE 2012 Yamaha Victorian Off-Road Championships will reach the halfway point in its season at Broadford’s State Motorcycle Sports Complex when Rounds 7 & 8 takes place there on May 19-20.

Rounds 7 & 8 of the VORC will also be held in conjunction with Rounds 7 & 8 of the 2012 Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championships.

Victorian Daniel Milner is hot on the heels of Tasmanian Matt Phillips, with just three points separating each other in the Championship Pro Expert class. Both were recently named as Australian teammates for the 2012 International Six Day Enduro in Germany in September.

Mitcham Harper - another Victorian named to represent Australia at the 2012 ISDE – currently sits ninth in the Championship Pro Expert class.

Yet another Victorian gunning for victory at Broadford will be Championship Women’s class leader Teneil van Doorn. The 17-year-old is hoping to maintain her nine point lead over fellow Victorians Haylee Malan and Charlotte Bolding.

“I’m competing in all of the VORC and AORC rounds, and as long as I stay on the bike and hopefully stay in front in the Women’s class it (the VORC title) could well be mine,” Teneil said.

Teneil has been instrumental in keeping the Women’s class going in the VORC for this season: “I would definitely like to see a full-grid of girls in the VORC in the future. It’d be awesome.”

Peta Thomas, Manager of the Female Participation Program at Motorcycling Victoria, is also pushing for a Women’s class at the VORC and the Hattah Desert Race in July. “Both represent a great opportunity to get more women involved in prominent off-road events,” Ms Thomas remarked.

“I’m not going to be top three for a while,” continued Teneil, “but it definitely gives me something to strive for (to beat Jessica Gardiner and Jemma Wilson) because that’s where I want to be in the next two years; to be right up there with them.”

MotorSafe's Mini-Licence Sessions for 2012

Expression of Interest: MotorSafe's Mini-Licence Sessions for 2012.

MOTORCYCLING Victoria's new MotorSafe Officer Misty Walton will be taking on the MotorSafe Program in 2012. In the past the program has proven to be highly successful, presenting to over 4000 students in Victoria in 2011.

However, in order to ensure that the program continues to progress, we are looking to implement an improved system this year to further encourage riders into the front door of clubs.

The program has previously run with Kick Start Days being held at clubs after MotorSafe Presentations have been conducted in schools. Participation in these Kick Start Days has been limited solely to those kids who have been presented to. However judging by various feedback, this system has often lead to minimal attendance numbers, and also difficulty in finding coaches to assist with the days.

So, in order to overcome some of these small issues, MV is now providing in conjunction with the program, free Mini Licenses to kids on the day of their school presentation, meaning afterwards there will often be 30 plus kids with new licenses and nowhere to ride. That’s where you come in!

A Mini Licence entitles each child to ride in non competition events for 12 months. We’re hoping that after participation in a ‘Mini License Session’ and with their parents saving $85.50 on what they would usually pay for a Mini License, that they will then sign up to become a member of your club and continue with their riding!

To make all of this happen though, we need your help. What MV is proposing, is that MotorSafe ‘Mini Licence Sessions’ could now be incorporated into either your two, free ‘Come n Try’ Day practice permits, or any of your normal club/practice days.

Basically, once your club has confirmed dates for either a free ‘Come n Try’ Day permit, or a regular practice/club day permit, the club then incorporates three, 20-30-minute ‘Mini License Sessions’ throughout the day. This will allow visitors and potential new members who hold Mini Licenses to see the club in action, as well as provide the opportunity to try motorbike riding in some cases for the very first time. The sessions will be supervised by an accredited coach, being either your nominated ‘club coach’ or our MotorSafe Presenter dependent on availability.

These ‘Mini Licence Sessions’ are of no additional cost to your club. Once you apply for your permit, you simply slot the ‘Mini License Sessions’ in when arranging your program (usually one in the morning, one around lunch, and one in the afternoon). The importance of these sessions cannot be understated; it is not only beneficial for the students, but of course for your club. This is a chance to sign up young and keen members, and possibly even their parents- after all, getting them to the track is often the first step to getting new members in the front door.

At this stage we are looking for clubs who would be willing to assist in running ‘Mini Licence Sessions’, from July 1, 2012 and onwards. Once the session dates are locked in and we have club commitment, MV will then approach schools in the region who would be interested in us conducting MotorSafe Presentations.

While running the presentations in schools, we will also promote the ‘Mini Licence Sessions’ being held at your club and do all that we can to ensure student attendance on these days.

If the club would be willing to incorporate the proposed ‘Mini Licence Sessions’ into your diary, please return the attached form to MV with your club’s date preferences.

We look forward to hearing from you, and having you involved in increasing participation in motorcycle riding Victoria wide. If you would like further information or to discuss this or the MotorSafe Program further, feel free to contact me on 03 9673 0610 or motorsafe@motorcyclingvic.com.au

The State Motorcycle Sports Complex will host Round 2 of the Victorian Junior MX C'ships this...

AUSTRALIA’s home of motorcycle sport, the State Motorcycle Sports Complex, will host Round 2 of the 2012 Victorian Junior Motocross Championships this weekend at Broadford on May 12-13.

After a successful first round at Ballarat, 12-year-old Morgan Fogarty tops two classes at the Victorian Titles: the 85/150 B Grade SW class and the 65 B Grade SW class.

The Central Victorian Junior Motocross Club member started racing only two years ago and has been loving motocross ever since: “It’s heaps of fun, I really enjoy it,” Fogarty said.

Morgan had a very impressive opening round, winning the two classes overall, even after getting back on his bike after an incident in the second moto of the 65 B Grade SW class.

“I won the next race after that, so it’s all good.

“I’d love to be the next Chad Reed or Dean Wilson,” Fogarty added.

The 2012 Victorian Junior Motocross Championships returns home to Broadford since the motocross track underwent major improvements in 2010 and has since hosted a round of the MX Nationals in 2011.

“It’s a good venue. It has lots of good ruts and that’s how I like it,” Morgan said.

Other young guns to look out for at Broadford will be the always-impressive Wayde Carter, who currently leads the 125/150cc A Grade and 250cc A Grade classes, and the exciting battle between Cody Dyce, Taj Marshall and Callum Norton in the 85/150cc A Grade SW class will be sure to thrill race-going fans.

Emma Milesevic will be looking to pick up where she left off at Monza Park where she’ll look to maintain her lead in the Vic Chicks class.

“The motocross track at Broadford is now one of the best tracks in Australia,” Junior Motocross Championships commentator Ken Watts added. “It’ll be great for these kids to develop their skills on a quality track that has hosted the MX Nationals.”

Round 2 of the 2012 Victorian Junior Motocross Championships starts at 9am on Saturday, May 12 at the State Motorcycle Sports Complex on Strath Creek Road, Broadford.

Be sure to follow the event live with regular race updates on Facebook at MV Motocross.
Victorians fly high at home round of 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals

Wonthaggi hosted Round 3 of the 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals on Sunday, April 29.

DANDENONG Motorcycle Club hosted Round 3 of the 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals at the Wonthaggi Motorcycle Complex, April 29.

Riders and spectators alike were greeted to near-perfect weather conditions, with the club preparing a great track for the riders, and in turn the riders providing great and entertaining racing for the crowd on-hand.

Carlton Dry Honda Racing Thor duo of Brad Anderson and Ford Dale achieved an instant reversal in form winning both of their classes in MX1 and MX2 respectively.

Two-time British Motocross Champion Brad Anderson lead the way in the hotly contested MX1 class. Anderson opened the day with a win in moto 1, then claimed back-to-back chequered flags in moto 2, before sealing the round with a solid third-place in the afternoon's 30 minute moto.

Joining Anderson on the MX1 podium were two very talented and up-and-coming riders in Todd Waters and Lawson Bopping.

Bopping has been showing great speed all year without being able to put a full race day together. It all came together for him in Round 3 in his team’s home state of Victoria.

"It is my first podium for the year and I am stoked with that result for myself and the team, they have been helping me out so much," said Bopping.

"The transition to the new team has not been to hard at all, I have struggled to get an overall result in the first two rounds, but the speed has been there from the start and now we have to just keep building," concluded the CDR Yamaha rider.

Third-place getter in the MX2 class was KTM rider Josh Cachia. Pre-race Cachia felt a podium result was close and his premonition was right on the money has he put his KTM team on the box in front of his friends and family in his home state of Victoria.

The 2010 Under 19s national champion praised his team, giving them credit for his race results.

"I have to give a big shout out to my KTM team, they make riding a dirt bike easy," said Cachia.

"It is easy coming to an event when you know you have a bike like that."

Adam Monea's second place in the final moto was enough to give him third place for the day over fellow Victorian Cheyne Boyd on his Honda. Team Zero Motorsports Suzuki rider Ford Dale topped the class on 69 points.

Sam Martin finished the day in second overall thanks in part to an opening moto win in the MXD class. Martin's result in the second race was not quite what he was after, but a third-placed finish in the final moto gave him his first podium finish for the season.

"My first and last races today were good, I got a bad start in the last race but I was able to come back through and get on the podium," said Martin.

Kale Makeham was the most constant rider in the MXD class with a 4-3-4 scorecard earning him the final spot on the podium.

"I felt that I have always had the speed since the first round, I just could just not get consistent starts to stay inside that top five every moto," explained Makeham.

"I was able to stay consistent today and get on the podium and I am very happy," concluded the privateer KTM rider.

Though he did not have the best day, Dylan Long still holds the points lead and continues to salvage good points even when the races do not go to plan

"I had a bit of a shocker in the opening race, I lost my goggles on the first lap which didn’t help," said Long.

"The rest of the day I tried to stay nice and consistent and I was able to do that, which I was pretty happy with," concluded the red-plate holder in the MXD class.
