After eighteen years of service as a dedicated volunteer Marshal, Zara Griffin is a familiar smiling face around the Australian Motorcycle Sport circuit.
The Western Sydney based volunteer is back on Phillip Island this weekend working the 2011 IVECO Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, and cementing her tenth consecutive year of service at the Australian MotoGP.
Zara first signed up to be a Marshal in 1993, when her step-son was racing Motocross and was required to provide a Marshall. As Zara’s husband had his hands busy fulfilling the role of mechanic, she found herself catapulted into the Marshall role!
Necessity quickly turned to passion, and Zara fell in love with working at the track. When her husband took up Club Racing in 1996, Zara followed him across the discipline line and began a new venture as a Road Race Marshall.
For the last decade, Zara has worked the annual Road Racing double-barrel, pulling on her overalls for both the Australian GP and the Superbikes.
Zara believes that one of the best elements of being involved is being part of team that works well, and lives by the motto it’s always a good day when you’re at a racetrack!
Zara’s advice to those thinking about taking on an Official role? “Give it a go – it’s fabulous!”
